Miami commissioners nearly doubled the size of the city’s no-panhandling zone Thursday, aiming to keep beggars away from Miami Heat games and arts performances that lure tourists and visitors to the heart of downtown.
The expansion, approved unanimously, will prohibit panhandlers from asking for cash around the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and in blocks north and west of AmericanAirlines Arena, near the lots where people who attend basketball games park their cars.
“This is the very beginning of taking back the streets of Miami,” said Commission Chairman Marc Sarnoff, whose district includes downtown. “If you want to build Miami, it starts at the very core of Miami.”
But of course I, NoSacredCow, have a solution that will benefit a wide variety of folks.
Make begging legal only in front of mosques, temples and churches.
- Followers of Islam are required to give alms.
- Followers of Judaism need to perform a good mitzvah every now and again.
- Christians really need to be reminded what Jesus’ message was all about. (hint: Jesus said, “If your brother asks for your shirt, give him your coat, also.” (Matthew 5:40)
Since houses of worship are exempt from property taxes and they don’t pay for city services, like cops directing traffic or watching over their parking lots during services and they don’t pay fire/rescue, or contribute to our library system, etc, etc, etc.
It’s a win-win!!!
Besides, Pastor Sonny Irons would have a hissy fit with the homeless begging in front of his 1.9 million dollar
home house of worship and that would be worth it alone. (see my previous post)
If it works in Miami we can take it statewide, then nationwide.
